Absolute Dark Knight by Frank Miller7/8/2023 ![]() I picked mine up for $375 in November 2002: a 9.8 copy in its original shipping carton. These have become the most sought after and collected of the Graphitti line with some substantial values. ![]() They were given to the creators, publishers, editors, staff, etc., normally as a gift. Graphitti always produced A/P or artist proof editions of their signed and numbered hardcovers: somewhere between twenty to fifty copies of the book that were outside the set number. Keep in mind these were live auctions at the store in those pre-eBay days. I remember when this book shipped: comic shops were allocated and quite a few ended up auctioning their copies. It was limited to 4000 signed and numbered copies with a signature page featuring art by Miller that was used for the Dark Knight statue DC released shortly thereafter. Additionally it featured five pages of sketches and preliminary art from Miller. The Graphitti Designs hardcover collected the four issues of the mini series and carried the same introduction by Alan Moore and afterward by Miller. ![]()

Joan didion west and south7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() John James Audubon, The Birds of America, 1830 Would that I could represent to you the dangerous nature of the ground, its oozing, spongy, and miry disposition. Stephen Vincent Benét, John Brown’s Body ![]() Here we not only see Didion’s signature irony and imagination in play, we’re also granted an illuminating glimpse into her mind and process. Though Didion never wrote the piece, the time she spent watching the trial in San Francisco triggered thoughts about the West and her own upbringing in Sacramento. “California Notes” began as an assignment from Rolling Stone on the Patty Hearst trial. Her acute observations about the small towns they pass through, her interviews with local figures, and their preoccupation with race, class, and heritage suggest a South largely unchanged today. “Notes on the South” traces a road trip that she and her husband, John Gregory Dunne, took through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Here are two extended excerpts from notebooks she kept in the 1970s read together, they form a piercing view of the American political and cultural landscape. Joan Didion, the bestselling, award-winning author of The Year of Magical Thinking and Let Me Tell You What I Mean, has always kept notebooks-of overheard dialogue, interviews, drafts of essays, copies of articles. ![]()

Golden Days by Mary Connealy7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() We meet new characters with Tillie and a plausible romance that just makes sense. Grace is so much more than what she seemed and I'm so thrilled that I gave her a chance.īut this book is about so much more than just dear Grace. Grace is a real person, and just one more example of what you should not just a person by their first impression they leave with you. ![]() It was by the beginning of chapter three that I was enthralled and ready to commit a full friendship, and by the end of chapter five, I was ready to stand behind her and beat off all the bad guys. But, upon reading the first chapter of Calico Canyon Grace came slightly off her pedestal and I began to have some compassion for her. She was definitely not my favorite character, especially in comparison to the wonders of Sophie and her girls. Upon reading Petticoat Ranch Miss Calhoun was present, but only faintly. When I got the background on this book, I was a little apprehensive about reading it since I knew that it was about Miss Grace Calhoun. ![]()

Sweet fall tillie cole7/7/2023 ![]() It’s good to have another one of us freaks on this team.” It’s about time a pompom chick ’round here broke the mold. “Are you talking to me?” I asked in confusion, checking around us to see if anyone else was here.Īustin smirked in a deliciously dark way and gestured to my hair and face. “It’s about fuckin’ time, by the way!” I suddenly heard and looked behind me, straight at Carillo. The voice within hadn’t had the strength to spoil it. I’d actually made it through a game unscathed. ![]() ![]() I stared back out onto the gridiron and sighed in relief… I’d done it. “I know exactly what you mean,” I replied wistfully and inhaled the smell of greasy food, churned-up grass… victory.Īustin glanced back to the tunnel and, without another word, began to saunter away. The replay of the game in my mind, the making of memories on this field.”Ī sense of peace floated over me at what he described. But I didn’t date, and from what I’d heard, neither did he. Austin Carillo was the Italian bad boy of UA: six-foot-four, beautifully olive skin, piercings galore, black ear gauges, neck-to-toe tattoos, dark hair and the darkest of brown eyes. ![]()

Sarah Morgan by Sarah Morgan Dawson7/6/2023 ![]() The diary of Sarah Morgan Dawson is no exception to this.Īn eloquent yet outspoken 19 year old at the outbreak of the war, her entries create vivid scenes of the tumultuous events that transpired in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Many Southern women wrote as a means of defying Union sentiments, as well as a way to reinforce their views quietly when verbalizing their thoughts and opinions had repercussions. While many women’s diaries focus on the mundane aspects of everyday life, they highlight social status, as well as a woman’s ongoing role with the war. For many Southern women during the Civil War, keeping a diary was a way to record the hardships of everyday life, and if not as a record, then as a way to pass the time when travel was difficult and social visits were non-existent. Diaries provide an intimate glimpse into an author’s thoughts and feelings, as well as provide an accurate account of day to day happenings. Courtesy of the Library of Congress.Īs a social historian, I love reading detailed diary entries that capture a single moment in time. It is much like the one Sarah Dawson would have made and worn in May, 1862. ![]() Ridgley posed with the Confederate flag in this photograph, c. Where the lost wander book review7/6/2023 ![]() I’m not sure if it would be better to begin with Chapter One and skip the Prologue or not. So while I was reading, I was anxiously anticipating this event. ![]() It is a spoiler for one of the main tragic events in the story. Prologue: I have mixed feelings about the Prologue. ![]() It’s more about their enduring love, faith in each other, survival, and hope for a bright future. Romance plays a part in the narrative but it is not the main focus of the story. Where the Lost Wander consists of a significant amount of trauma, challenge, endurance, survival, and hardship. Romance connotes a lighter and happily-ever-after story in which romance is the main focus. Genre: Where the Lost Wander is shelved as a western romance however, I might tweak that and categorize it as a love story. Don’t miss the author’s notes detailing her own family history and the real characters upon which this story is based. ![]() but it is also incredibly sad and difficult to read in places. A page-turner, Where the Lost Wander is filled with historical details and establishes a strong sense of place…. Writing: If you’ve read From Sand and Ash (a favorite read) or What the Wind Knows, by Amy Harmon, you know that Harmon’s stories are beautifully written. ![]()
