To kill a mocking bird first edition7/3/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Life can’t be easy when everything you hate about success stands between you and the Piggly Wiggly. I sympathize with Lee, who has steadfastly refused to take part in the merchandising of her most famous accomplishment. The courthouse has long since been turned into a Mockingbird museum, to the delight of a constant stream of camera-toting tourists, foreign and domestic. The gift shop is in the venerable courthouse where as a child Lee watched her father practice law, and which she later rendered so vividly in her book. ![]() That would be a mere T-shirt’s toss from a gift shop peddling Mockingbird hats, tote bags, necklaces, Christmas ornaments, refrigerator magnets, wrist bands (inscribed “I see it, Scout, I see it!”) and paper fans. 6,372) that served as the model for her novel’s Maycomb, has found herself living a short drive from one restaurant called the Mockingbird Grill and another named Radley’s Fountain, after Boo Radley, the character in Mockingbird who might be voted Least Likely to Become a Restaurateur. Strongly inclined to put aside the hype and hoopla and let literature speak for itself, Lee, the best-known native of the town (pop. To spend an hour in Monroeville, Alabama, is to know why Harper Lee, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, ranks as one of the crankiest writers on the planet. ![]()

The first trench (8x3m), within the enclosure, revealed considerable tree root disturbance, although a cobbled surface was recorded. The site consists of a circular banked enclosure, c 20m in diameter two trenches were opened in order to discover the nature of the enclosure wall and assess tree root damage. A community archaeology project in May and June 2005, carried out as part of Perthshire Archaoelogy Week, involved two evaluation trenches through a later Iron Age homestead ( NN95NE 3) in Black Spout Wood, to the E of Pitlochry. It is probable that the original diameter of the homestead was c.27.0m when complete. The remainder of the wall and much of the interior has been destroyed by quarrying. ![]() Only the S half survives, as a stone wall c.2.7m thick with an outer face four courses high in the SW. The "circular building" erroneously called a fort by Dixon, is in fact the remains of a homestead (c/f NN44SE 7). Some of the stones on the side nearest the burn have been removed but the circle is quite apparent. The path passes through, and has partly destroyed, the NW side. (Area: NN 953 577) This fort is about 150 yards below the Black Spout waterfall and on the top of a steep bank over-looking the burn. It is supposed to date from Edward I's reign. At Edradour, on the top of a steep den, are the remains of a circular building, 60' in diameter internally with walls about 8' thick, called the Black Castle. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I first came to my obsession with mushrooms and mycelia through reading and hearing about the work of Paul Stamets (the American mycologist who has published mushroom scholarship classics including Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World and Fantastic Fungi: How Mushrooms Can Heal, Shift Consciousness & Save the Planet) and Margaret Wheatley (whose book Leadership and the New Science: Learning About Organization from an Orderly Universe encouraged me to look to the world around me for models on how to organize humanity toward more alignment with the Earth and each other), and a trip that Movement Generation took me on to the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center, where I got an early taste of what it could be like to live in partnership with a fecund Earth. I am such a fan of the potential wisdom of mycelia that I want to slow down the trend of language here and explain what I know so far about what we can learn from the fungal world. ![]() Sometimes, in this fast-moving world of constant content, we can absorb terminology, and perhaps have a general idea of something, or just nod along when we hear the word, without really understanding the wealth of knowledge available to us. In the past few decades, there has been a growing interest in, and scholarship of, mushrooms and mycelia. ![]()
